Social media is the ultimate distraction in every workplace. However, there is an easy fix for this. Most employees either put their phones on silent or tuck it away somewhere.
But the same can’t be said for those of us whose job requires the use of social media. We can’t just put our phones on silent and tuck it away because social media is our workplace.
Having a job on social media makes it that much easier to get distracted by all the new posts, trending topics and sudden notifications.
During my time as a social media coach, I’ve come up with various ways to avoid the inevitable distractions that come with having a job on social media.
Here are my best tips for avoiding distractions while working on social media!
Create An Action Plan
Another way to avoid distractions when your job is on social media is to create an action plan.
Before opening any social media app, I make sure that I fully understand what I need to get done. I usually have the tasks I need to complete outlined in a notebook that I work alongside to keep me on track.
This helps me stay focused and makes me more efficient in my work. Try taking the time to plan out exactly what you need to before starting your work on social media.
Having a clear process will help you avoid distractions when your job is on social media.
Understand What Distracts You
Recognize what distracts you and learn how to combat it.
For example, I know that if I click the trending page on twitter, I’ll get distracted. So I try to avoid clicking it as much as possible. Understanding the things on social media that distraction you is the only way you can intentionally avoid them.
You won’t get anything done if something else is constantly changing your focus. Therefore it’s your job to realize those distractions and act accordingly.
If getting a notification distracts you, try turning off your notifications before getting to work. Then, after you’ve completed everything for the day, you can go over those notifications.
This is great way to avoid distractions when your job is on social media because you can separate your work from your personal social media time.
I’m fully aware that identifying and combating your distractions is a difficult task.
Here is something you can try to get started:
Later on, when you’re working on social media, I want you to take note of every time you turn away from your work. Write down exactly why you stopped working and how long you stopped working.
At the end of the day, take a look at your list. These are your distractions and for every distraction, there’s a solution that you now have to come up with.
Learn To Prioritize
Do you have time to be on social media for personal use or is work more important? Ask yourself this question whenever you feel yourself getting distracted while working on social media.
Sometimes just recognizing what we’re doing or about to do (in this case being distracted) helps us make a better decision. So, if you can learn to prioritize your work over personal incentives, you can start to avoid distractions when your job is on social media.
Make Time To Get Distracted
I know what you’re thinking. Aren’t we supposed to avoid distractions? Yes, we are, but one way to do this is to make time for your distractions.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t expect yourself to focus on work 100% of the time, especially when working on social media. Your mind will constantly drift to other topics and persuade you to get distracted.
The only way to deal with this is to make time to be distracted. Schedule in time before or after work to aimlessly stroll around a give into distractions.
I make a promise to myself that after each social media work session, I can browse the site as much as I like. This drives me to work harder and stay on task.
Making time for your distractions is one of the best ways to avoid them.

Stop penalizing yourself for being distracted, instead learn and grow from your experiences to become better.
